No point in delaying the inevitable...
Well, you were warned by my intro over on the right that this would happen: time to talk me and my music.First up my involvement with the band Autons. I must make it clear here that Autons is very much Dave Jones’ and Tony Rollinson’s vehicle. I am, however, dead chuffed to be involved with two people I respect so much. And I hope the relationship continues. If nothing else, playing with some other people has been great FUN and can only help my musical ability!
I’ll be playing with Autons tomorrow night, Friday 04/02/05, at The Hobbit in Southampton. Then we’re playing at The Wedgewood Rooms, Portsmouth, this coming Sunday, 06/02/05, for a Asian tsunami appeal gig. Also on the bill on Sunday are Bonemachine, Red Letter Day, Serotonin, and Rolling Dog. But the night will surely belong to the reformed-for-one-night-only Thirst. The Pompey legends will be in action for one last time. Doors for the Pompey gig are at 7pm and tickets just £7.00, with all proceeds going to the appeal.
Second, I have remixed a track by Pompey punk-new-wave legends Red Letter Day. This exclusive version of ‘Strangest Angels’ will appear on RLD’s forthcoming album alongside the original. The band are well happy with my version although it does constitute a bit of a departure from their usual sound. Anyone who knows me will know how much I absolutely LOVE the Day and have done for years. So to be involved with them in this way is a great honour.
Thirdly, the lmt-music-lab.com website is back up and running. It is quite basic and anyone looking for Qhixldekx info should still check out qhixldekx.com; it’s really there to collate info on my various projects, including some forthcoming production work I may be doing. For this reason I have moved the remix info from the Qhixldekx site to the Music Lab one.
And last but not least, work is progressing on the new Qhixldekx CD. I have decided against labelling any future releases as an ‘album’, or a ‘single’ or an ‘E.P.’ What seperates one from the other? Is it the number of tracks? The length? In the case of singles I guess it is easy but where does an E.P. end and album begin? It isn’t cost effective for me to put out short releases anyway, but I might do the odd 3 to 5 track release coz sometimes the impact of that is good. I tend to work on batches of songs so it is probably inevitable that at some point maybe half a dozen tracks sit together nicely, and therefore demand a release of their own.
At the moment this new Qhixldekx release is looking like what you might call a ‘double album.’ I have around 30 tracks on the go at the moment and there are both some musical themes amongst the tracks, but also some lyrical ones. I still plan to call the release, whatever form it takes, ‘Between the City and the Deep Blue Sea’ because it has been so directly influenced by Portsmouths seaside/inner-city dichotemy. I am quite attracted to the idea of a ‘double CD’ as, to my knowledge, no one in Pompey has done this before. Obviously it’s indulgent, but then I don’t feel any pressure to appease anyone but myself. The key thing is this: I wont be rushing it.
